Tips for finding the perfect Wedding Dress for you

Monday, August 23rd, 2010 by Miss M

For most people their wedding dress will cost more than any other dress they’ll ever purchase – so a lot of thought goes into finding the right one.

Before you try dresses on, browse through bridal magazines and websites and keep pictures of all the dresses you like. Take these along with you when trying on dresses to give shop assistants an idea of what you are looking for.

When you start dress shopping try on lots and lots as you will not know how a dress will look until you see it on you. The dress you love in photos may not flatter you and a dress that looks like nothing you’d ever wear could turn out to be amazing.

Bridal Shop Etiquette – the do’s and don’ts!

  • Call the shop first to see if you need to make an appointment – the last thing you want to do is get there and have no one available to help you.
  • Don’t take too many people along with you – too many opinions will leave you confused and exhausted. It is good to have at least one person there though – perhaps your Mum and/or Maid of Honour.
  • Wear underwear you won’t be embarrassed to be seen in as it is pretty hard to try on wedding dresses by yourself.
  • You’re generally not allowed to take photos of all the dresses you try on (although your mum or friends might be able to get in a few sneaky shots on their phone). But once you commit to buying a dress you should be allowed to take a photo so you can remember what it looks like!

Where do you start when planning your wedding

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010 by Miss M

So…you’ve got the man of your dreams and the ring on your finger – now where on Earth do you start with planning your big day?

  1. Set the date

This makes it so much easier when trying to book everything from your reception venue to your makeup artist. However, if the most important thing to you is making sure that your photographer is available, then find out what is going to suit them first. If you’re not fussy about a date, then pick a season – spring, summer, autumn or winter. But remember spring and autumn are very popular so you have to get in quick!

  2. Set your budget

This is important for establishing your priorities and how much money you have to play with. It is also a good idea to find out from the beginning how much your parents and your fiancé’s parents are going to chip in. If you know from the start then you can work out how much you need out of your own pocket to create your dream wedding.  A typical wedding budget is approximately 42% for the Reception with the other 58% spread amongst the dress, suits, flowers, rings, photography, videography, hair and makeup, music, transport, cake and bomboniere. You need to work out which things are most important to you and allocate your budget accordingly. Set up a spreadsheet to keep track of all of your expenses – how much you’ve paid and how much you owe.

  3. Draft the guest list

This can often be the hardest part, especially when your parents want to invite all of their friends (some of whom you don’t even know).  Start by sitting down with your fiancé and writing a list of all the people that definitely have to be there – your close friends and family. This is called the ‘A List’. Then, on the ‘B List’, write a list of people that Read the rest of this entry »

Invitation Inspiration!

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010 by WGSA

We had some requests for some Invitation samples and design ideas, after some quick research I found quite a few that I that I liked, most of these have been printed using a letterpress technique. I also found a local designer Allan Moran who had made some really unique invites using a Gocco press according to Alan it can take a bit of time to set up but we both agreed it’s worth it in the end.

Sing out if you know of any other local suppliers that have great invites that we can look at …

Keeping the Kids Amused

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010 by Miss M

I am sure there are many of you out there that will have a number of guests on your list that have children. Now you have two options.

A: Invite the parents and state on the invitations that it is strictly “no children” and risk upsetting the parents and have them not attend, or…
B: Let the children come but keep them occupied and amused so that the reception goes off without cranky parents and bored kids.

Little kids get restless and bored easily and having to sit down and be quiet for a long period of time is going to be a trying experience for them. So, I thought I would try to keep the kids at our wedding amused with some fun activities packs. A little bag especially for them with a name tag, packed with pencils and colouring-in books will make them feel special and included (fingers crossed!).

Sit Down Dinner vs Casual Canapés

Thursday, April 15th, 2010 by Miss M

I am sure we have all been to weddings where the bride and groom have spent a fortune on a formal sit down dinner for the guests. They have agonised over seating arrangements for hours and nevertheless, you have found yourself a table with deaf Aunty Bessie and a bunch of strangers you think you may be related to.

canapes

I recently attended a beautiful wedding where the reception was a casual drinks affair. Held in the afternoon, waiters topped up our glasses as we were served  beautiful finger food. It was a beautiful and relaxed way to spend time, with guests being able to mingle and chat without having to be eat our way through 3 courses of tough, dried out old meat.

This of course got me thinking about our own reception. I would like to think that we are a more of a casual sort of couple and I would love for my friends and family to be able to walk around and chat to each other and most importantly, dance.

So, I think I am going to break with tradition and spend my money on canapés and more champagne!!!

Setting the Date

Now that we have committed ourselves into this madness, and more importantly, I have a nice big rock on my finger, we now have to set a date.

With the weather being so strange and unpredictable all over the world at the moment, I am really conscious of not wanting to be getting married when it is 45 degrees and likewise for wind, rain and hail! Read the rest of this entry »

Thursday, January 14th, 2010 by Miss M

WeddingFlowers

Firstly, a little bit about myself. My darling partner, Mr M and I have just become engaged and I am now on my way to create the wedding of my dreams. Like most girls, we all dream of the day we will walk down the aisle and I know that everyone, even the most cynical and jaded out there, have an idea, a thought or an inkling in the back of their minds of what their special day will be like.

Over the coming months, I hope that you will share with me my personal journey into the exciting and new world of weddings. I am saying now that I am not going to turn into a Bridezilla but you never know… Read the rest of this entry »
